Ok, let’s talk beverages. I think the biggest sabotage of any healthy diet can be beverages. Water is the biggest need of the human body, but that’s not always what we drink. Anything besides that really isn’t that great for you. All things have something that you probably shouldn’t be taking in. Now, some things are ok in small doses, black coffee and unsweetened tea for instance.  I’m a coffee person, myself, but I do drink tea when I’m cold in the winter.

Now, anything besides that, has something in it that you shouldn’t be drinking. Diet drinks? Awful, there has been a lot of research on the bad affects of aspartame. Regular pop? Do I even have to say? It’s full of bad things. You need something with flavor, infuse your own water with fruit, that way you can get some benefit of whatever fruit you add to your water.

Sometimes you want more than water, I get that. What I’ve started doing is making my own smoothies at home. Not only do they have great flavor, but they also have full servings of fruit so it’s almost a meal. They’re completely customizable and I believe the ones I’ve been making are vegan (I think, I’m pretty sure). There’s not much of a recipe, more of a suggestion of what I do.

Just go to the store and get your favorite fruit. I’ve been doing bananas, strawberries, kiwi, blackberries, nectarines, spinach (yes, spinach) with some full pulp OJ, almond milk and a little bit of Justin’s Organic Peanut butter. That’s it! To judge how much I need, I throw everything in the cup that I’ll be drinking it out of, if everything fits in the cup, that’s your serving. I don’t have a normal blender (unless I bring it to work like I am today), I have an immersion blender and I almost think that works better. You can blend whatever you need to in the container you’re going to use it in, less clean up.

Because I don’t use yogurt, these are a little bit thinner than a normal smoothie that you’re probably used to, but there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s very refreshing any time of year, and you can make it taste however you’d like. Just play with your flavors, change the juice, change the peanut butter to almond butter, you may learn something you like that you’d never thought. This idea is more about discovery than anything else.
