Happy Halloween!

Posted on October 31, 2009. Filed under: Dining | Tags: |

Today offically starts the season of holidays were America stuffs themselves for fun. Halloween has to be one of the most fun, in my opinion, because it involves dressing up as something you’re not (I’m wearing orange, so I’m a pumpkin.) and going and asking other people to give you candy.

I remember when I was younger, bringing huge bags out to trick or treat hoping for all types of things, espically cow tails and Reese’s Peanutbutter cups.  After sorting through my candy, and sharking it with my siblings, I would take handfuls and hide them in my room. I did that for years until I realized how out of shape I was.

Now, I try to stay away from candy because I have such a sweet tooth, but my mom bought me two big bags, one of them being candy corn autum mix. You can’t pass that up. Candy corn is a cheap candy, but it is one of the best, I think. My dad was hoovering over the bag until I opened it the other day.

Candy is great because it reminds people of when they were younger. It doesn’t happen how old you are, open your favorite piece of candy and life is good. Many companies haven’t even thought about changing their candy because they know people will still eat them. Tootise Rolls, for instance, haven’t changed appearnce for as long as I’ve been alive, and I don’t think they dare mess with the formula. And why should they? There is no reason to mess with something almost perfect. Now, if only I could stop eating my candy corn, I feel the sugar rush coming

100!

Posted on October 29, 2009. Filed under: Dining |

This is my 100th post. To bad I am sick and don’t want food! This doesn’t happen very often, let me tell you, even if I’m not hungry if you ask me what type of food I’d want, or if I’d want to get food, I’ll give some sort of answer.  However, yesterday and today I really haven’t wanted or thought about food. I forced myself to eat some chili yesterday and some cream of brocoli soup today, but I’m not interested in any sort of food.

Being sick always opens up a weird door in the food area. Most people say chicken soup helps them, and I believe that. But what if you can’t eat? One needs food to get strenght, but if you can’t or don’t feel like eating? You’re almost sick for longer, and that’s not good either.  My suggestion is to drink lots of liquds that have calories in them, and try to eat bread or crackers.

What is your favorite sick comforte food? What weird home remedies do you have to make you feel better?

Pievember

Posted on October 27, 2009. Filed under: Dining | Tags: , |

I have mentioned Pievember in a post earlier. Pievember came from a time when I lived with my friend Katie, and (almost) Victoria, and in a November we made so many pies. The question, why November? Why not, Thanksgiving is in November so therefor, perfect for making lots of pies. Pievember starts early for me however. My dad’s 61st birthday was today, and he prefers pie to cake, so we had pumpkin pie. With lots of Redi Whip, of course. I already have the urge to start making a lot of pies, it cannot be stopped, and it won’t be.

I applied to work at Gayety’s Chocolate today, you can look them up www.eatmychocolates.com. They handmake every chocolate and ice cream they sell, and I’ve been in love with them ever since I first tried their ice cream. Speaking of, I love the fact they sell thier ice cream in pints and quarts to take home, bought my dad a quart of butter peacan for his birthday, I can’t wait to try it either.

Any pie requests or ideas? I will make anything, just to try it!!

“Vacation” Eating

Posted on October 25, 2009. Filed under: Dining | Tags: |

Whenever I go out of town, I get to have a lot of food that I normally wouldn’t have at home. Friday when I went job hunting in Chicago, my friend and I stopped at the new Victoria’s Secret on Michigan Ave. On the way out, one of the people working there would hand you a bag. I figured it was chocolate, but, it was Garret’s Popcorn. I had never had Garret’s before that day, and I remember thinking “this popcorn is tragically good” when I tried my first bite. It was chedder and carmel corn mixed togeter. Sounds strange, right? But it was a perfect combination of sweet and a little salty. I ate the bag very quicky.

Last night for dinner at  my friend Sara’s, we (she did) bacon alfredo. All she did was buy a pound of bacon, cooked half of it (I said we should’ve used it all) with some garlic before adding store bought alfredo sauce. It was so good, and in retrospec, the others agreed with me on needing more bacon. As I believe, there is NO such thing as to much bacon.

Ads: death to our brains

Posted on October 21, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized |

When I took theatre management this past spring, one of the things we talked about was advertising. We had a lenghty discussion on why some ads work and some don’t. One of the biggest conclusions the class came to was the more annoying the ad, the more likely we are to remember it. Take the new Taco Bell “black taco” ad. That is by far one of the more annoying ads I hear on the radio almost on a daily basis. Sadly though, because of it’s annoying nature, people remember it, and a lot of them try the “black taco” at least once. Another ad that I heard on my way into work today was the Dos XX’s beer commerical. Sure, I know what they’re getting at, but the James Bond thing is a bit over done, and it really doesn’t make me want to try the beer.

Another thing my class agreed on was companies only stick to advertising that works. So, no matter how annoying, poorly made, or bad the product might be, the truth is, enough people are trying the product because of this.

No, this really wasn’t completly a food posting, but it seems my food life has gotten borning again. With little money to go and try new places or buy fun ingredients for new dishes, it’s hard to get new things. Sometimes I live off strange thigns like hummus and crackers for days. No, I’m not joking.

Food we don’t like

Posted on October 20, 2009. Filed under: Dining |

Dinner today reminded me of a subject a lot of food people don’t talk about: food we DON”T like.  It’s completly impossible to like everything we eat every day. It could be because of taste, texture, spices or bad expirence. Regardless of the reason, there is just some food we won’t eat. Now, if you were from a family that made you eat everything from your plate, even if you don’t like it, things are a little different. My mother taught me to be polite and eat what was put in front of me without complaing, and that still sticks today. Now, because of that I have found some foods I didn’t think I’d like just because I had to eat them. Granted, I also found some foods that I wouldn’t enjoy, no matter how many times I had to eat them. One food is strogenoff. It could be the fact that it looks like puke, or the strange smell, but I’ve never liked it. Mom decided to make it for dinner today, so I had to eat it. Sadly, we didn’t finish it all tonight and I’ll have to eat it tomorrow.

What food don’t  you like? Why? Did your parents do what they did to me?

Breakfast

Posted on October 17, 2009. Filed under: Dining | Tags: |

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Therefor, breakfast food is the best food ever. I hadn’t had breafast food in a while, which I jst realized today. I had stayed with some friends last night (there was beer involved) and we went to the Broadway Cafe in Valpariso, IN. The cafe, located right next to Valpariso University, was packed at 10:00 am. It serves breakfast all day, which is a plus. I got their 2 egg breakfast, which comes with your choice of side (hash browns, grits, ect) and your choice of bread. I got it with hash browns and pancakes, and of course a cup of coffee. The eggs were wonderful, I was reminded of the eggs my mom used to make. The hashbrowns were also very good, they were freshly made and much better than some frozen ones. The pancakes were nothing special though, and I’m not sure why.  However, the food was still good, and the prices were reasonable. The next time I’m out near Valpo, I’ll eat there again, maybe get some ice cream to!

The …white meat

Posted on October 15, 2009. Filed under: Main Course |

Chicken is cheap and easy to make. And a little borning. A few years ago I decided to make chicken a little more tasty, and a lot more juicy. Basically, take a chicken breast and cut it in half. Season the inside of the chicken breast with italian seasonings (basil, oregno, salt, pepper) and put provlone slices in the middle. Fold the chicken back up, season the top and put mozzeralla cheese on top. Bake in a 425 oven for 20 minutes, and enjoy! It’s served best with white rice and some sort of bean. Enjoy!

From hot to …..cold

Posted on October 13, 2009. Filed under: Dining | Tags: |

For some reason, in the cooler months, ice cream places seem to generate a lot of buisness. I have no problem getting ice cream in the dead of winter myself, which begs the question, why? It could be because snow makes people think of the ice cream. But, for whaver reason, it does happen. Today was one such day for me, except not for ice cream. I had a huge craving for a smoothie. Now, I normally don’t get smoothies mainly because I drink them to fast and get brain freeze, but I wanted one non the less. Dairy Queen recently combined with Orange Julius, so I decided to check that out. I got the tripple berry Julius, and for the first time, didn’t suck the thing down to get brain freeze. That was mainly because there wasn’t much flavor. Sure, I got some strawberry seeds, but not much else. I was a little saddened by this because I was hoping for more of a berry flavor, but then again, what can one expect when berries are out of season?  However, this did fullfill my craving, so it wasn’t all that bad, just not the best ever.

A Chill Falls Over the City

Posted on October 13, 2009. Filed under: Dining | Tags: , |

The sun starts hiding behind clouds or in the southern hemisphere. Trees go from having bright green leaves to a rainbow of colors. The wind seems to get stronger and everyone adds another layer to their cloths if and when they step outside.  Children and adults returning home can think of one thing: how they want something warm.

As I’ve said a hundred times before, fall is great for food. Some of my favorite warm food items are really drinks. Even though I love (and still live on) coffee, once the weather turns cold I get cravings for hot cocoa, and hot spiced apple cider. Maybe its because cocoa and cider don’t dehydrate me as much as coffee does, or maybe its because I get that much caffiene that I just don’t want it any more than a pot a day. Either way, I still end up craving cocoa and cider every day.

Coming up soon is one of my favorite food holidays ever, Thanksgiving. Honestly, the only reason why I’m even thinking of it is because a friend announced today that it is Canadian Thanksgiving. I almost baked a pumpkin pie, no joke. Pievember is upon us, are you ready?
